Gemstones in Mogok for example are found in 2 kinds of deposits: Primary deposits: This means that the gemstone crystals are found after miners to break the rocks in which the gemstones have formed in. Secondary deposits: This means that the miners are washing the ground. The gemstone bearing gravels is locally called "byon" in Mogok. This byon is the result of the erosion of the rocks by the effect of wind, water and frost. The crystals found in these deposits are usually slightly tumbled or smoothed as they polished each other. Gemstones crystals from primary deposits are very interesting as usually they show nice crystals faces not eroded and also they can be presented shown still "in situ" which means attached to their mother rock. In this case the specimen is considered to have more value than a single crystal because the beautiful contrast of the gemstone color compared to its matrix and also the geologic interest of the specimen coming from highly reputated place such as the Mogok valley gemstones in matrix are very rare as most of the gemstones mines are exploiting secondary deposits. The reason of this fact is that secondary mines are much cheaper to run as the miners don?t have to move or blast an important volume of rocks but just to wash ground. In the Mogok Valley the secondary deposits were mined for centuries and are now nearly depleted. Many important mines are now Hard rock mines. Many gemstones can so be found either in matrix or as single crystals from alluvial placers but some stones as peridots are very rarely seen in their matrix on the markets. The traditional crystals on matrix from Mogok are the stones from the marble mines: Mainly the red rubies and spinels, the yellow chondrodite, Micas,... In the west of Mogok near the Sakangyi pegmatite area many quartz, topaz, tourmaline, aquamarine can be found associated with feldspar, mica and form very attractive pieces. Sapphires can also be found in the west on Mogok but except from the Onh Dan area such specimens are very rare... MK
